Today, Watershed Ambassador for the Mullica River Watershed, Kassandra Archer, taught the students how to observe and identify macroinvertebrates in Mr. B's Backyard ponds. She also explained how they are indicators of water quality.

I learned that many invertebrates live in Mr. B's backyard, and that its their home. What surprised me is that there were so many water bugs, and i didn't expect it. I thought there would be like four or five different species of bugs, but there were hundreds.

I learned that you can't really identify the water if it is clear and not dirty from dirty and not clean. Something that surprised me is that how any creatures can be in a pond. I haven't seen anything like that ever in my life.

1. I learned today at Mr.B’s backyard project that you can tell that the water is polluted by the animals that live in it. In Mr.B’s we found species that can live with polluted water but it can also live without it. So there is no clear sign if the pond in Mr.B’s backyard project is polluted or not but I learned first hand how they check to see if water is polluted.

I learned that there are living species in Mr. B’s Backyard Classroom besides tadpoles, I also learned how to check and see if the water is purified or not. I learned more about predatory birds and the other animals and plants that are native to New Jersey. What surprised me most were the small animals living in the pond, like the aquatic worm and the tadpoles, the birds also caught my eye along with the dead frog we found on the side of the pond.

1.What I learned about that lesson about macroinnvvertebrates is that they can help you determine water quality. These organisms live in the water hiding and protect6ing themselves. If there are only leeches in the water you can tell that the water quality is bad. But, if you find these oorganisms you can tell the water quality is not bad

Kassandra has taught me that dragon flies normally spend most of their life time just under water. When the time comes, the dragon flies then grow their wings and live in the sky. Another aspect that I learned was that the pond wasn't exactly clean. The water quality was a little bit dirty as you can tell from the bugs swimming through this pond. What surprised me the most was how many insects were living in Mr. B's Backyard. There were several bugs that I haven't even seen just from looking at the pond.

1) I learned that organisms can tell you about the water quality of a water source. They can do this because if there are certain animals that can’t stand pollution in the water source you know that it is a good water source. For example, if you see frogs and dragonflies which cannot stand much pollution you can infer that the water quality is good.

I learned something very cool that I didn't know before doing this lesson. I learned that organisms actually inform you what the water is like. You have to take samples of the water and obeserve different organisms and examine them. Certain species only live in clear water, so when we found that species, we knew that the water in the pond was farely clean. Something that I found cool was that dragonflies live most of their life underwater. Also, they only spend three to four months flying around like we see them. I just thought that dragonlfies were always a flying creature, not a water organism.
